Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons containing numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
