The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Key Part in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has claimed 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of participating.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and there are permutations involved, aside from the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he's going to play a key capacity. With luck starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lower back issue.

He has a history of recurring issues, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the series.

He mentioned that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "small issue and confirmed that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the first Test as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games in any case. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
